Hello world!

Welcome to The Other Camera, or TOC for short.

I’m a photographer.

Which means I own cameras. Proper cameras. Big cameras. Cameras with lenses that cost more than they reasonably should. Cameras that shoot RAW files, have far too many menu options and occasionally require a backpack just to leave the house.

And then there’s the other camera.

The one that’s always with me.

My phone. Currently an iPhone 16 Pro.

The Other Camera is a place for the photographs I take when I’m not necessarily trying to take photographs. Things I notice. People. Light. Shadows. Odd little moments. Places I’ve been. Things that made me stop for a second and look.

There’s no real plan here.

This isn’t going to be a phone photography tutorial site. I’m not particularly interested in reviewing the latest camera app or telling you the ten settings you absolutely must change right now. Although it may happen occasionally.

See? No real plan here.

There probably won’t be much talk about megapixels either.

Think of this more as a visual journal.

A photograph, and whatever I feel like writing underneath it.

Some posts might have a story.

Some might have a thought.

Some might simply be a photograph I liked enough to keep.

There will be a lot of black and white. You have been warned.

For most of my photographic life, taking a photograph has involved deciding which camera and which lens to use.

The phone changed that.

The camera is just there.

And because it’s just there, I think I notice different things with it. There’s less ceremony. Less expectation. Less pressure to make something worthy of the camera I’m carrying.

I can just look.

And occasionally press the button.

That’s what The Other Camera is about.

Let’s see where it goes.

The photo is of Ed, one of the two cats that reside with my wife, my daughter, and me. There is another cat, Bella. And a dog, Niles. In a house too small for the lot of us.
